“It has been a very deliberate decision over the past few weeks,” Monchi wrote in an open letter. “I am going to a place where they have shown me affection from day one, where they appreciated my work philosophy, and above all, where they respected my status as President of CDSF 1940.”

Monchi, who had been serving as president of CD San Fernando, acknowledged the difficulty of leaving the club but emphasised his commitment to both sides. “After 10 months of unforgettable moments together, professional football has called on me again. I am convinced this will be beneficial for all parties,” he said.

He added, “Let no one doubt my bond with CDSF. I have full confidence in the team, the staff, and above all, you, the fans—the family that we islanders are—to keep growing every day. I will continue to contribute as much as I can, whether in San Fernando or Barcelona, and I will always be proud of my club. Now and always, with La Isla as my banner.”

In his first official comments as Espanyol’s director, Monchi stressed the importance of “trust” at a pivotal moment for the club. The Catalan side sits just two points above the relegation zone and has yet to win a match in 2026, making the upcoming weeks critical for their survival hopes.
