Florentino Pérez finds himself caught between a rock and a hard place as president of Real Madrid. The executive is experiencing one of the most difficult moments at the helm of the Merengue club, though this is not a new situation in his long career as a leader.
The white club is in a state of total crisis. A second consecutive season without titles has exhausted the patience of the Madrid faithful, who have grown tired of the passive attitude of its stars, especially Kylian Mbappé.
The recent incident between Álvaro Carreras and Rüdiger, added to the fight between Tchouaméni and Valverde in the white dressing room, has put Valdebebas on high alert. Arbeloa’s days as Real Madrid coach are numbered, and the tension is so high that Mourinho is the frontrunner to return to the bench in the coming weeks.

This situation is similar to what the club and especially Florentino Pérez experienced in 2006. He became president in 2000, but that season marked the third consecutive year without major titles, mirroring the current reality at the white club. The management of ‘Los Galácticos’—stars such as Figo, Zidane, Ronaldo, and Beckham—led Florentino to resign from his position on February 27, two decades ago.
That summer, Ramón Calderón won the elections and became the new president of Real Madrid, but the arrival of Guardiola’s Barça and the irregularities during Calderón’s presidency ended with the return of Florentino Pérez on the same day the 2008/09 season ended.
“The players are confused and perhaps too pampered. I made a mistake. I spoiled the players,” Florentino said at the time. A similar situation now, two decades later, could once again drive the president from his post.
